This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love watching the students in my class learn to read. Once they do, they fall in love with great books and can't get enough. Unfortunately, our classroom library is lacking "great" books and is currently filled with old, ripped up, boring books.

A library filled with books the class will love will encourage them to read daily.

This summer I am working on revamping our classroom library so it will be engaging and accessible to students. The library will be organized by book series, topic, theme, author and genre. The books I am asking for were chosen because of their high interest level and appropriateness for first graders. The children will be able to choose the books they will read by book shopping in the library weekly. I am asking for baggies for the students to keep their chosen books in.

Each school year I am given a group of eager learners who can't wait to learn to read. It is the first time they are sitting at individual desks instead of tables like they did in kindergarten. They are also able to choose which books they want to read and are so proud of how independent they are and how much they are learning. The students in first grade begin to take ownership over and enjoy what they are learning. These new books will increase the students' engagement with books. A library filled with great books! What could be better!
