My Students

I teach an enthusiastic group of fourth graders who are each as unique as they are lovable. My students are eager to learn and grow. Their passion for learning comes out in so many ways, from sharing their opinions on our class read alouds to expressing their thoughts in feelings in their reflection journals. Although all my students have their own strengths and growth areas, we all particularly love our daily independent reading time where we turn on our twinkle lights, get cozy, and curl up with good book.

My students thrive in environments where they feel known, loved, and valued.

As a class we are striving to build that space for each other. My students come from many different backgrounds and have many different needs, but each day we are committed to coming together and supporting one another in our learning journey.

My Project

In a literacy-rich world, students success depends on their abilities to access information through print. Studies have shown time and time again that the only way students get better at reading is by reading. In my classroom, I want to create a space where reading is not a chore, but a joy.

Developing lifelong readers starts now.

However, for many of my students finding a book they love can be a challenge. Many of my fourth grade students are reading at an early elementary level, but early elementary books no longer appeal to them. I want to provide those readers with high interest books, such as graphic novels, to increase their confidence and help them develop good reading habits.

In addition to providing my students with books that span a range of levels, I also want to provide my students with books they can connect with. As public school students in New York City, my students come from a variety of backgrounds that aren't always reflected in the books they read. I have intentionally curated a selection of books to add to our library that will provide my students with "mirrors" for their own experiences and "windows" for experiences different than their own. This project will not only help my students become stronger readers, but it will give them an opportunity to develop a true love of reading that will stay with them for a lifetime.
