My Students

My students are joyful, rambunctious, high energy and full of life. They all have big dreams-to be lawyers, basketball players, college graduates, astronomers, and more.

I teach a self-contained, special education class in Baltimore, at a Title I school where one hundred percent of students receive free lunch.

They are all unique in their personalities and learning styles, and demonstrate their knowledge in different ways. In my classroom, they learn critical academic, behavioral, and life skills. I want to give them all the tools they need to be successful and accomplish their goals.

My Project

The number one complaint I get from students during independent reading time is that they have already read all the books in our library. They want to get better at reading, but they will never be engaged if they have to keep reading the same books over and over again. For this project, I have requested a variety of books at all levels to add to my classroom library.

The books I have selected showcase topics that my students are interested in, like animals.

They have characters whose experiences resemble the lived experiences of my students. The best way to engage reluctant readers is to provide them with high interest materials, or materials that reflect their identities. My students will be able to make connections to these requested books. They will be interested in learning about what the books have to offer. We need this wonderful books to expand our library- and our minds!
