My Students

My first grade students absolutely love to read! Throughout the day students have many opportunities for independent reading, and they are always excited to choose books based on their own reading level and interests. A lending library will help extend their love of reading beyond the school day.

My students are bright and energetic 6 and 7 year-old first graders who attend a neighborhood charter school in a low-income neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Over 96% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We are in our fifth year as a turnaround charter school, and our students are making remarkable growth. As young children coming into their own as readers, my students love to explore the world through books, both fiction and non-fiction. They are curious and voracious readers. We recently launched a Read Every Day initiative to encourage students to read at home - independently and with their families. We graph how many books are read each week, and students are thrilled to see the bar graph grow.

My Project

With these materials, we will be able to launch a classroom lending library to accompany the Read Every Day initiative. Many students want to read more at home but are held back by a lack of books. Our school does not have a library from which students can check out books. By establishing a classroom lending library, students will have access to books that can be brought home. Students will be able to check out books, return them, and then check out new books. They will practice responsibility through caring for books. The rotating book rack will set aside the lending library from our general classroom library and build excitement about the books that are available for check-out. The various books that I have requested range in reading level to meet the needs of all of the readers in my classroom. Additionally, books by beloved authors like Mo Willems will invest students in the joy of reading.

All students should have access to books that they can read at home.

At a time when school libraries are becoming scarce, a classroom lending library will provide students the opportunity to continue feeding their love of literature and of reading.
