My Students

Hello! Our school is made up of 1,500 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. We are in a thriving, yet Title I, community in Queens in NYC. We have many high achieving students whose families are native New Yorkers, but we also have many who are English Language Learners whose families are hardworking immigrants. We also have a special education population as well. I'm the model teacher with a lab classroom, and I work to try new innovative teaching ideas so that my colleagues can see it in action before they try it themselves. I attend amazing PDs with revolutionary teaching strategies, but I often need technology to implement those, and this would allow me to use these wonderful techniques on my students. This computer will be entirely for student use, and a single computer can mean a world of difference.

My Project

We are a wonderful but very large school of 1,500 students, and we have 90 laptops that teachers may reserve, but on any given day 3 out of 115 teachers have the laptop carts, and it becomes more of a hassle than a resource. One laptop that I can lock in my closet and keep in my own room would allow my students to have a "search it" station in our classroom. I will rotate it each day among groups so that all students have turns using it to enrich our reading and writing experiences in class. I could allow students to blog, comment on authors' and politicians' twitters (after I approve their Tweets of course), and really just deepen the lessons that I work so hard on. The real world component will be brought in with a single computer that is always at my disposal.
