My Students

Our students are a diverse group of international learners who speak a variety of languages, many of whom are starting school for the first time. At the beginning of every year, we forge a shared identity as a "school family." I establish procedures and routines to foster independence; so that I can provide targeted, more intensive instruction for students in small groups.

My students are real, but they are only available to me virtually.

I have to be able to connect, teach and assess students who I see in little shifting boxes on a screen. Despite the challenges, we have bonded by singing, dancing, playing games, doing art, listening, speaking, and now even reading and writing together. It's literally a whole new world, yet children are so flexible. My colleagues and I are amazed by how well they are adapting!

My Project

Virtual assessments are much trickier than in person. With children in little boxes on a screen, I have much fewer modalities available to me, especially when I am instructing them live.

Reliable data is the foundation of creating groups and designing lessons to target those specific students' needs.

Data with very young learners is not easy to access. Learning goals like letter names and letter sounds, rhyming, blending and segmenting sounds provide the foundation for reading. It takes a lot of time to document progress on paper -- and time testing is time that is lost for instruction. It takes additional time to view and process the information on pieces of paper. Time has never been a teacher's friend, and even more true in this COVID world!

I just learned about this assessment software that already has a library of reliable assessments that can be shared on a screen. It collects data in real time and automatically organizes it all into graphs, spreadsheets, even detailed parent reports. I can easily print personalized flashcards for students to practice during workstation time. Since I will not need to spend time processing data, I will be able to tailor lessons to what students need immediately, which will lead to faster progress. What a dream-come-true!

Because it is so comprehensive and so time-saving, it is also expensive. I have used the program for the trial period, and now I need to pay to continue to access it. My administrators do not have the funds for the fee.
