Help Ms. Hedgepath

In my kindergarten classroom, I do my best to provide real, hands-on learning experiences for children. Kitty Stone Elementary School is located in east central Alabama and our free/reduced lunch rate is around 50%. We have students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The very poor students that we teach often come from housing projects where a "yard" is unheard of. Planting seeds, nurturing plants and watching plants grow to maturity would be a truly new experience for them. Even though the science content to be taught is expansive with this project, the experience of working outside, learning to complete a project and reap the benefits of hard work will also provide needed life skills for our underprivileged students. This proposed project will fund materials that will supplement a gardening project, to be conducted this spring outside of our kindergarten building. Kitty Stone has 7 kindergarten classes and all classes would have access to the resources. Materials necessary would be a classroom garden kit and emergent readers to teach plant life cycles in the context of small group reading lessons. A garden will be constructed outside to provide the students with a real-life experience of planning, designing and working in a garden. Indoor classroom planting will also be a part of this project. The following materials will be used to supplement the project (to be purchased with other funds): 4 large railroad ties to use as border (each 8 feet), rich fill dirt, vegetable seeds, starter plants, fertilizer, watering cans, water hose, outdoor thermometer, seed starter kits, tomato stakes, plant stakes (to record type of seed), rulers (to measure plant height), small notebooks to record observations, rain gage and baskets/bowls to collect and wash vegetables. During my last semester at Auburn University (1989) when I received my B. S. degree in Early Childhood Education, we made a garden with children outside of Haley Center. I have not forgotten the value of this experience. We planned, planted and experimented while using science, social studies, reading and mathematics. We experimented with sunlight, water usage, seed types and plant types to grow the best garden possible. I would very much like to give my current kindergartners this wonderful experience! Thank you for your consideration of this request. My son (9th grade), my daughter (6th grade) and my husband will volunteer to help set the raised beds up if the project is funded. We already have one in our backyard that is kept up by my son!
