This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I spent this spring in distance learning and we are starting this year in distance learning as well. In many ways distance learning has been a struggle for my students; they are dealing with confined learning spaces, uncertain living environments and inequitable access to resources. My students and I are separated by sickness, uncertainty and space; at the same time, we are united by our love, our history together and our dedication to learning.
We are living through history.
My students are incredible people. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. We work hard every day as scholars, artists, critical thinkers, and friends.
My Project
My students have many questions about difficult topics, particularly in 2020. I would like to have books available to read to children or lend to them that discuss these difficult topics. Reading is what holds my class together. A Kids Book About has the mission of helping kids and their grownups have honest conversations by making books about challenging, empowering, and important topics told by diverse authors who know that topic first-hand.

We need these mentor texts to help ground us in difficult conversations. With topics such as gender, systemic racism and body image, these books will give my students access to more information; and after reading the books, my students will be more confident in their choices.
