My Project

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka is a vital addition to any 11th-grade English class, especially in our diverse and vibrant high school. This novel offers students a unique opportunity to explore themes of identity, resilience, and cultural heritage through the powerful and poetic voices of Japanese picture brides who immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. In a city where students come from all corners of the globe, this story resonates deeply, offering a lens through which they can reflect on their own experiences or the experiences of their families. The book’s distinctive narrative style and historical significance make it an engaging tool for developing critical thinking, empathy, and awareness of the complexities of assimilation and community.

I know my students will love to read "When the Emperor Was Divine" because it provides a powerful and deeply personal perspective on the often overlooked historical injustice of Japanese American internment during World War II, allowing them to understand the profound human cost of prejudice and systemic racism through a compelling narrative that explores the complex emotions and experiences of a family facing displacement and loss of identity; it also teaches valuable lessons about the importance of empathy and critical thinking when confronting difficult historical events.

We read August Wilson, Toni Morrison, Juno Diaz, Tommy Orange, and many other works by various and diverse American authors! Let's Otsuka's voice to my curriculum!
