My Students

My students have a favorite time of the day: when they get to use the apps on my iPad. They will ask and ask when it is their turn to look at the pictures for our lessons, use the apps we have downloaded, or use the notes section to write their ideas.

When my students come to my classroom at the beginning of the year, I often hear them say things like, "I don't like to read" or "I'm not good at math." My students never leave the year saying those things!

Although my students come from a high poverty area, many having very few school resources, they are incredibly hard working and very grateful for the chance to learn with the extra supports our school provides. I work with students who have a hard time learning within the whole class setting, needing additional small group help. We spend a lot of time learning in different ways, with the use of hands-on materials, body movement, and art. Looking around the room, you will see lots of colors, games, hands-on manipulatives, and most important of all: smiles. The students love getting to come work with me each day, and I have seen incredible growth in their learning once their individual learning styles and strengths are being met.

My Project

We need two iPad minis and headphones to let more of my students make use of all the math and reading learning apps we have. I purchased one iPad for my students, and have over 50 apps for them to use, targeting various skills and concepts. However, you can imagine that one iPad only goes so far, so each student doesn't get to use it as often as I (or they) would like. Having two more iPads would allow three students to work at once, giving more targeted, hands-on learning to my students. Since my students struggle with traditional forms of teaching, I have seen amazing results when I couple small group instruction with technology for support. More than one time a student has been able to grasp a concept that I have tried to teach for over a week once they can manipulate and use an app that teaches that concept. I want all of my students to have access to this rich resource.

My students ask me on a daily basis when they can use the iPad.

They keep asking if I can get more. I want to make this dream come true, not just so that they can use meaningful technology in our class, but so they can learn how to read, write, and do math in fun and engaging ways. I hope you'll be partner with me to make this a reality.
