My Project
As a Title I school, we cater to a highly diverse population. Our students range from impoverished to upper middle class, and this text would be relevant to all students, as it portrays a variety of socioeconomic issues, while also addressing cultural differences. Our theme for English 10 centers on the human condition, and Howl’s Moving Castle gives students insight into human nature while fostering a message of acceptance and tolerance. This archetypically and thematically rich text will create a strong basis of analysis as the English 10 introduction unit to prepare students for the rigorous curriculum they can expect to span the remainder of the year and forward throughout their high school career.
Our goal is to diversify the texts that students read, while expanding their minds about what qualifies as “academic literature”.
Our students will be learning the Common Core standards of analysis, citing evidence, and academic discussion through this fast paced and engaging novel. Throughout the rest of the school year, students will continue to practice their analysis, writing, and discussion skills by reading a plethora of other texts written a range of authors, from classic cannon to popular contemporary. The classic nature of this story, alongside its modern interpretation is key in bridging the varieties of texts that students will encounter this year.
