I am a first grade teacher at Milton Elementary in Lafayette Louisiana. We are a "country" school with an awesome group of students and we are very thankful for organizations that allow us to write grants to get "cool" things in our classrooms. With this grant, I am requesting HOT DOT products. The hot dot learning program has cards and talking pens that are self checking. Students will work on a set, for example reading readiness- the card might have a picture of a star on it. The student uses the pen and decides which word says star (step, stand, star). If they get it right, the pen tells them positive words or sounds (correct, ta da!, great job...). If they get it wrong, it says different things like sorry, try again, zzap! and other comments. It also glows green for correct and red for incorrect. We are required to have literacy centers for the students to be in while we work with guided reading groups, but it is really hard to keep the students on task. I feel that this electronic education center would be loved by all the students - which in turn makes guided reading run smoother. I have 20 students and I believe the hot dots would act like a teacher for each child working on this activity. The hot dot gives immediate feedback and the skills targeted become increasingly advanced. The sets requested are for reading readiness, consonants, vowels, blends, word families, phonics, addition, subtraction and comprehension skills. Again - thank you for allowing teachers to write grants to aid in our children's education!
