Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being at our school for several years, I have gotten the chance to really get to know many of the students in the school, including those I have never taught. Many of them have gone through seriously adverse situations and misfortunes that impact their everyday life, especially their education. I am amazed at how resilient they can be, and how they push through to the best of their abilities regardless of hardships that affect them. Being a fifth-grade teacher has shown me how fast some students have to mature. I have taught their younger siblings in previous years (coming up from kindergarten and first grade) and see how they take care of their family. Each child that I have gotten to know at this school has my heart.

I want nothing but the best for all of these students, and that includes giving them hands-on experiences that will be memorable to them.

My students need to be able to feel like school isn't another one of their draining duties or work. I want all of them to enjoy school and look forward to each day in my class, whether in person or virtually. They truly deserve the best!

My Project

As we prepare to go back to school in person, I want to give my classroom a much-needed makeover, and that starts with replacing the bookshelves. For the last couple of years I have had to use old preschool cubbies as bookshelves because that's all I had to work with. They are too bulky and there is a lot of unused space due to the hooks and spaces meant to hold backpacks and jackets. I decided it was time to make a change and treat my students and myself to something more visually appealing and appropriate for our books.

I have so many awesome new books that deserve a special place with easy access for my students.

The bookshelves I'm requesting are the perfect size for the space in our classroom, and will allow for better organization and quick-finding when it's time for any student to choose a book to read. They will also provide more space, which means more books! I'm looking forward to this new addition to the class, and am excited for how it's going to transform our reading corner.
