Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage, and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.

Despite- and often because of-such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth, including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap- around program.

Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.

My Project

Life in middle school can be tough. The challenges of simply growing into a teenage body can wear kids down. Add on homework, tests, and peer pressures and you've got the all the makings for a good dose of stress! Because stress wears down our immune systems and our capacity for learning- we need to nip it in the bud. Healthy students can come to school ready to learn; a classroom without drama provides the opportunity to learn. Teaching students to care for their health and emotional well-being is about the best life-skill we can give them. Just as important are the academic gains students can make when they feel healthy, safe, and calm. Healthy students are much happier and a happier classroom is more productive...more successful! We need resources to help us practice mindfulness: Hoberman Spheres to help students breathe deeply and calmly; stress balls to alleviate students who experience anxiety or anger; books to help us understand the practice of mindfulness; a diffuser with scented oils to create a healthy, soothing atmosphere; and, Clorox wipes because even mindfulness cannot kill the cold and flu germs that spread like wildfire in a classroom. We look forward to doing our best each day, as your support will help us feel our physical and emotional best
