My Students
"Education us not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." ~W.B. Years
The students I work with love learning and are always wanting to do more hands-on activities.
They love doing projects and when they get to help plan, its that much more exciting. We do investigations, explore new areas on field trips, and learn about things beyond the regular classroom curriculum.
My students keep me on my toes, and remind me that school needs to be fun in order for them to focus on their studies and to understand the value of an education. Their neighborhood has declined in recent years, and many go home to places where there are issues that would make a lot of adults have difficulty focusing. They want to learn, but sometimes it is difficult to focus.
Even though there are many students who lack support at home, they are given the boost they need by their teachers. With this boost, they become excited to learn, care about their education, and strive to do their best. I love watching the transformation of students when they see they are supported, and truly emerge as learners and scholars.
My Project
My students love our class pets and would like the opportunity to raise chicks from eggs. We would study the life cycle of the chicken while the eggs are in the incubator and learn about how to take care of baby chicks. When they are to the point where taking care of the chicks is too much we will take them to a prearranged farm to live out their days. While learning about chickens and their life cycle, we will also be learning about and taking care of our other classroom pets such as the bearded dragon, leopard gecko, and guinea pig.
An incubator and supplies for raising chicks will give my students a learning experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.
By donating to this project you will provide students with materials to learn about things they would normally see only in a book.
