Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is an extremely high-need community, I typically see around 85 students a day and my focus is in Mathematics and Technology. As a teacher, I am struggling to teach technology skills without such basics as calculators (which the majority of my students cannot afford) or even computer mice. I teach Discrete Mathematics, Pre-Calculus, and Computers/Technology courses in my High School.

My best students turned out to be several girls who impressed me with their perseverance on anything I threw at them. Their parents do not live in this country, they have jobs after school to pay for basics - I bought everything for them and the classroom, they were the reason I got up in the morning. As a first year teacher, there were no supplies in my classroom - just textbooks, and so, I started from scratch - a calculator on sale here, construction paper there, no supplies was an understatement. My students wanted to learn, and most could not afford to bring 5 pieces of construction paper for their final 3-D Geometry project. I will have the same girls in my Pre-Calculus class, and I want to give them every opportunity I can to succeed with technology - if I have mice, calculators, and a couple of other basic supplies.

The supplies are easy to find, but in a class of 25, each graphing calculator, can be a burden on a teacher (students do not have access to such funds). With my year-long training on using TI-Inspire, and my desire to incorporate technology into my classroom, even having calculators available for in-class use only (I see roughly 80 students in my Math classes, and only 2 or 3 carry a scientific calculator), that is already a step forward. They have the potential, and the enthusiasm, all they need is a little help.

Technology is everywhere, and by supporting my students, you will have roughly 80 students benefit from just the in-class use of graphing and scientific calculators, and IDK (I don't know) will no longer appear on the student's paper when scientific calculations are required - because I do know that with your help, they will see the point of numerical exploration, analysis, and how with just this exposure to technology they can overcome the obstacle of poverty their families face.
