I teach a special education class for children with emotional and behavior disabilities. The children are in grades kindergarten through third grade. I teach these children math, ELA, science and social studies. They go with their general education peers to PE, art, music and library. The children in this classroom are academically behind their peers, get easily frustrated and are often difficult to motivate. I am constantly trying to find ways to reward the children after they have worked hard on their academics.
The math series that we use in the classroom is very effective, but it is not always a lot of fun. I incorporate games and other activities into the math lessons to help bring fun to their group time. I have nothing in my classroom like the Grand Slam Math games and I know that the children will enjoy playing the game and learn a lot with the review activities. One great thing about this game is it can be played as a whole class or in small groups. I use activities like the Grand Slam Math game as motivators for the children. They can't play the fun games if they don't follow classroom rules and complete all the activities the teacher has assigned. This is a great way for the children to review their math skills as well as improve their teamwork and social skills; something the children in this class constantly struggle with.
