My Students

Every classroom needs a gathering spot! We need a place in our room for the students and teacher to come together. A large rug is the perfect spot to come and gather together as we learn new things and about each other each year.

My school is a Title 1 school in a larger city with a high poverty rate.

Many of our students do not come to school with the basic supplies they need to start the year, including crayons, pencils, notebooks, and in some cases, even uniforms. For many of them, the structure of the school day and the consistency of a classroom is a safe haven. I work very hard to create fun, engaging lessons that will keep my first graders eager to learn new things each day.

My Project

I would like to have a colorful, soft rug for my classroom so my students to have a place to sit. We use our rug every day, several times a day. In the morning, we meet on the rug to greet each other, share important events, and sing songs. On the rug, we read stories, update our class calendar, and write whole class stories together. The rug is centered in front of our easel and Smartboard, so students are able to easily see the work we're doing together. During reading time, my students grab pillows and spread out with a good book on our rug. They play math games with a partner or group there as well. It is the classroom "hub", a gathering place for my students to learn together. Though they have their own separate spaces at our tables, the rug allows them to sit together, work with each other, and focus better on our lessons.

They love having somewhere special to come each morning to greet each other, and a place to say goodbye to their friends at the end of each day.
