My Students

I have a group of active and vibrant first graders that love and crave hands-on learning. Many speak a second language and all come from various socio-economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. My students are truly special in the sense that their backgrounds offer rich experiences to one another, both academically and socially.

They love learning opportunities that allow them to actively engage in projects, such as building and exploring.

At the mention of "we're going to be making," their eyes light up and they're captivated at what they're about to learn. My goal as their teacher is to design units of study that stems from their interest and high level of engagement through exploration and hands-on activities.

My Project

As part of the first grade curriculum, my students need to know about plants and healthy food. I asked them what it is they want to learn and how they want to learn it. We discussed and brainstormed, and with many interesting ideas, we narrowed it down to learning more about vegetables. They want to utilize a space near the parking lot to grow their own foods from seeds. Several students mentioned they see bugs on plants and want to know more about them.

By the end of our discussion, we were engrossed in the idea of learning science and health through a vegetable garden project.

My students will learn what it takes to grow vegetables and the types of insects that are beneficial and harmful to plant growth. They will also learn about various types of vegetables, possibly ones that they may never heard of or tasted since my students come from various backgrounds. They will be able to sample them individually and as part of a salad. This act will provide them the opportunity to consume nutrient-dense food and learn how to make healthy choices for meals. Finally, they will learn how keeping hands clean during food preparation is important in their wellness as they perform a health and science experiment on germs.

This kid-inspired project will bring plenty of nutritious foods to the classroom by growing, harvesting, and eating fresh vegetables that connect to other curriculum.

My students are thrilled about this upcoming unit and can't wait to receive the necessary resources to fulfill their learning appetite, such as gardening tools to start planting and ridding weeds. The resources will enrich the kids' knowledge on insects' impact on plants, and help them learn how to make food choices and maintaining a healthy and wellness lifestyle.
