This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a bilingual SLP in the Bronx NY. I am trying to start a new session in our school to help our students to improve academic skills especially in reading. Our students need a new, interactive, and fun program to improve their phonemic awareness skills to improve listening and reading.

In our school we serve a unique and multicultural community. I work with children from kindergarten through third grade. I am trying to start a new session in our school to help our children with phonemic/phonological awareness and articulation/phonological processes difficulties as part of the RTI intervention.

My Project

Speech Language Pathologist can make a positive difference in the life of a child who is at risk for a reading disability or that has been identified with a reading disability. Reading is a foundational skill for learning and is essential to all academic skill areas (National Reading Panel, 2000). RTI is giving us SLPs the opportunity to work closely with other professionals to provide our children with more opportunities to overcome their delays. I have requested materials to improve phonemic awareness skills in children such as 4 DVD smartboard games (1 pick a trick language interactive game, 1 let’s learn early reading skills!, 1 let’s learn language! & 1 pick a trick building words game), 1 double-sided write & wipe magnetic easel, 8 privacy partition, 1 flip & write word family practice board, 1 light up the sound! Phonemic awareness kit, 1 alphabet sound teaching tubs, 1 phonemic awareness folder game library, and 1 let’s talk! Oral language box.

The PA program that I will implement will increase comprehension of PA and sound/letter correspondence.

It will encourage students to participate and learn their sounds through motion. It will incorporate different types of learning styles. Sometimes hearing the sound and seeing the letter is not enough to help struggling readers. This program will keep students actively engaged in literacy building activities.
