Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 9th - 12th graders who are all tackling extremely challenging high school math curriculum. The students in my classes range from 13 - 18 years old. About 40% of my students have Individualized Education Programs and/or are English Language Learners. Most of them live and go to school in East Harlem, a diverse and culture-filled neighborhood in Manhattan. The majority of my students live in low-income housing, public housing projects, or even shelters. Many have come into the classroom carrying a baggage of trauma that most people have not had to deal with in a lifetime.

Despite all that my students have to deal with outside of our school doors, they are used to coming to school EVERY SINGLE DAY— with an enthusiastic smile on their faces, ready to learn.

Our school has always been a safe and comforting place for my students who relied on the school staff for emotional support and the school building for food and warmth.

My Project

When schools were shuttered back in March, no one could have predicted that we would have been teaching remotely for the rest of the school year and, possibly into the following school year. Our school district, the New York City Department of Education, is the largest school district in the country. We made remote learning happen at the drop of a dime, without training or experience. Now, we are doing the same, as we open schools in the fall in a hybrid/blended learning model.

Clean classroom air and ventilation in the learning environment are the pillars of safety as we attend school for in-person learning.

Although students will be attending school in person only 2 - 3 times per week, teachers will be attending 5 days per week. An air purifier is a MUST for the safety and well-being of all individuals entering the classroom. My students will be learning in one classroom for the duration of the school day and teachers will be the ones transitioning to ensure the safety of student groups.

Many of my students are anticipating the return to in-person learning, but are extremely worried and anxious about COVID-19, due to what our city endured back in the spring. Our classroom windows only open 6 inches and we will not be able to use a fan or air conditioner to circulate air, due to CDC guidelines. An air purifier will clean the air in the classroom and circulate it so that we can all feel at ease. This air purifier is the last piece of the puzzle that we need in our classroom to ensure our protection, safety, and well-being as we embark on a new learning journey together.
