A Fraction of the Beat: Thinking of Fractions as Music!

My students need a tenor drum and 2 sets of multi-mallets to expand the marching band drumline. The tenor drum will add that middle tone missing in between the snare and bass drum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Boom-tap, boom- tap, boom-tap. Everyday teachers ask their students to stop tapping on the desks, the walls, the doors! That tapping, however, is a unique opportunity to teach fractions to talented percussionist, who in turn, can become part of the ever growing, highly spirited school drum line.

The is a Title I school with a "œC" classification.

This year'™s theme is, "œThe sky's the limit. Aim high, don't be afraid of heights". The school is located in the south Dade area serving 612 students in grades 6-8. 82% of the learners receive free lunch meals, 3% are Limited English Proficiency, 24% receive services through Special Education. Demographics demonstrate a varied student body consisting of 52% of the learners are black, 42% Hispanic, 5% Anglo, .5% Asian, 0.2% Indian and 1% are multi-racial. The middle school houses the highly successful science/zoo magnet program and beginning this year, introduced 9th-12th grades which will focus on Conservation Biology. The students will benefit directly from this funding by having the opportunity to study percussion skills from a community volunteer and learn rhythmic and math skills from the music instructor. Students will find learning fractions easier when it is put to music rather than just doing a math problem.year's

My Project

Every child in the school is not offered an elective class, nor does every child have the opportunity to take band (or any fine arts class) due to their academic schedule of magnet, honors, gifted, advanced, or recovery courses. This holds especially true for students in the special education population, who have limited access to an elective and want to be part of an organized group where creativity is highlighted. The tenor drum and multi-mallets will allow students to join the drum line after school and participate in all band activities. This includes school pep rallies, community events like Veteran's Day parades, Martin Luther King Jr. birthday parades, holiday season parades, and other special invitations for performance throughout the year. Furthermore, these students, will have the opportunity to understand the mathematical breakdown of music and how fractions are merely the beat, i.e., whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, thirty second notes and so on.

Students will now be able to draw upon their music skills to complete math problems.

This project will allow me to say yes to nearly every student that believes that being part of the band will give them the opportunity, confidence and courage to play and instrument. Students will be able to take their musical skills to high school and college band. More importantly, these students will also become a member of an organization that will bring them lifelong friendships, discipline and knowledge.
