A Field Guide to Birds, Bugs, and Weeds Did you know that the antennae of ants are made of tiny segments that function like our brains? Cut off one segment, and the ant can no longer retrace her steps to the nest; remove another segment, and she cannot identify other ants belonging to the colony. Interesting facts such as these can capture the interest of children and help them move beyond vague ideas about "bugs” to a more mature understanding of and appreciation for living things. Even better are the experiences that children have outdoors with living plants and animals. As children discover the amazing variety of animals and plants in their own neighborhoods, textbook examples of the “diversity of nature” take on a whole new meaning. I am confident that meaningful outdoor education experiences can not only make the children in my classroom better science students, such experiences can also promote a new generation of "naturalists." To achieve these goals, I need your help. Our school, which is located in a high-needs, urban environment, includes large areas of neglected land that we plan to transform into an outdoor education “classroom.” But before we begin digging up plants and shrubbery, I would like the students to learn what plants and animals are already living and growing on the land. In the project I am proposing, students will create field guides to the birds, insects, trees, and plants living near our school. Working as scientists, the third and fourth grade students will observe, document, and describe selected plants and animals. The project will also help the children hone their research, reading, and writing skills. What we need to make the field guides a reality - and this is where you come in - are digital cameras and a small printer. With this equipment, we can publish accurate field guides that can be used by the entire school community. Your support for our project can help promote the intellectual and emotional development of the children who will soon inherit responsibility for our small planet.
