Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are passionate teenagers from predominantly latino and black communities who come to school seeking guidance, compassion and knowledge. Many of them have struggled balance the increasing demands of school with many shared responsibilities at home, leaving them with little time to explore their passionate and creative side.

Theatre has the power to have engage students in other characters lives and build empathy and let them cathartically experience emotions while building an appreciation for the creative arts.

As a special education teacher in one of the most poverty stricken district in the United States, I have become used to making something to making something out of nothing nonetheless, I realized that my students shouldn't.

My main goal increase their academic confidence and creativity and feel that their future is bright and purposeful. I am devoted in making sure that my students graduate high school as strong independent minded artist ready to think outside of the box and embrace the beauty and artistry that surrounds us but is often overlooked.

My Project

With a class set of August Wilsons award winning play, my students will be able to vicariously experience, empathize, and connect to many social justice issues that still affect people today. Students will be able to connect to the character, situations and emotions and help them create their own voice and opinions regarding topics such as racism, feminism, classism and parenting.

For students who are often disengaged from school because of lack of interest and connection with the text, reading this play will allow them to build passion for literature and the creative arts.

As a final project, students will be able to preform this play for the school community to bring to light the issue they have learned but also share the work of contemporary authors of color like August Wilson.
