My Students
My students are a highly-motivated group of individuals in a challenging, college preparatory program within a high-poverty, urban, comprehensive high school. Most, though not all, of them are either first-generation Americans or immigrants to our country.
We are a bright spot in a troubled district!
My students inspire me to continue to do what I do - which is of course fulfilling - and they motivate me every day. Your generous support of our project will show my students that there are people out there in the world who care about them, too!
My Project
In the senior year of my IB English class, students must read and analyze four works from the same genre -- and this year, we would like to study novels. To make the unit relevant to current issues, we would like to study four texts that center on women and women's issues across different time periods.
We have selected Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," Toni Morrison's "Beloved," Nadine Gordimer's "The Burger's Daughter," and Jane Austen's "Emma" (which we already have copies of!).
All are high-quality, excellent works of literary fiction. In reading these works, my students will gain valuable practice analyzing the ways in which different authors create their works, as well as what we can learn from each unique portrayal.
Of course, we could probably find electronic copies of all these books, but there's something special about having a physical book in your hand as you read great literature, something that makes the experience all the more tangible and transformative. By contributing to our project, you will help my students to have the best learning experience possible.
