This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The themes of oppression, representation, forgiveness, and pursuing future goals in the fantasy graphic novel Squire are also represented in my immigrant English-language-learning students' choice of inquiry projects, which makes this the right bookclub book for the right kids at the right time.

For students to grapple with these fraught themes from multiple perspectives in their book clubs requires that I provide them a fantasy novel like Squire.

The compelling pictures support their literacy while also setting the story apart from the particulars of the social and political context of each student’s situation so that they can imagine new possibilities in old conflicts.
