My Students

I teach studio art to teenagers in an inner city school after an 18 year career teaching in a suburban school with many more resources. I have been working hard in my classroom this summer to make my space one that honors the creative potential of each child and one that creates a community where everyone feels empowered to make work that matters.

My students face trauma and uncertainty in their daily lives and I want my classroom to be a place that is consistent, safe, and provides room for imaginations to grow and heal.

With enough support, these young artists will thrive.

My Project

A drying rack is essential to an art classroom that preserves and honors student work. Currently, my classroom has clothes lines that extend across the ceiling for drying projects. I want students to have pride in their own creative work, and I want them to know that their art is safe when they leave the classroom.

I want student artists to see the art studio as a place where they can thrive, both creatively, and emotionally.

I want them to be able to create a portfolio of their work that will help them gain admission to college, building a future where there are more artists, museum professionals, and art teachers of color. Ensuring this future begins with something as simple as a professional drying rack. Keeping their work safe and ensuring the craftsmanship of their collection of work will help students envision their own creative potential.
