My Students

Within a typical class I will have highly gifted students, students with special needs, and also English learners. Over 62% of the students at the school qualify for free or reduced lunches, and for many of these students their only access to technology (computer desktops/laptops) is at the school site. With more state and national testing as well as core textbooks becoming digitized there is an ever increasing gap between technological fluency in my classroom. When my students have prolonged access to technology their presentation skills flourish as well as their ability to research and dive deeper into unit themes.

My Project

Logistics...11:30 PM you're tossing and turning thinking about tomorrow's lesson plan when inspiration hits. You remember an old NY Times article you used that would be the perfect accompaniment to the selection your class is analyzing. Logistics...7:30 AM rifling through stacks of old files looking for a class set for 1st period. 7:45 you locate that file only to realize that your class size is 35 vs the previous cap size of 25 (5 years ago when you last used it). Logistics...sprinting down the hall in a moment eerily similar to an infamous football star dashing for his plane you charge for the copy machine with 10 minutes to spare. Standing in line behind Dave waiting for his chem tests and Terri running off the Declaration you realize that 11:30 epiphany will have to be postponed.

Access to a digital resource provides my students and myself with the type of flexibility that is not limited by logistics.

"Johnny you forgot your book again at home. No problem let me upload the text selection to your account...click...Logistics. This grant would revolutionize my classroom with Chromebooks and open my students up to a world of choice. The ability to change lessons on the fly. To differentiate Lexile levels, to provide audio/media adaptations of poems, short stories and novels creates a classroom where limitations are no longer dependent upon a clear path to the copy machine.
