Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Dream, design, and deliver!”

Each student makes up an essential, unique thread within the fabric of our school community.

These creative, innovative, and enthusiastic students are the future of fashion and design. On a daily basis, these dedicated students work endlessly to bring their concepts to life in the form of clothing and accessories. Imagine the sense of accomplishment when a student revels in his or her work: a finished pair of pants, a shirt, a coat, and so on. As an educator, it is just as thrilling to bear witness to this process.

Akin to the garment district, our school is situated in Manhattan where even the skyscrapers do not reach the heights of our students’ ingenuity and talent. Our goal is to support and prepare these remarkable students for success in higher education and to follow in the footsteps of alumni, who have gone onto schools such as the Fashion Institute of Technology, The New School, Pratt Institute, Savannah College of Art, and Design, etc.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where there are rows of sewing machines instead of desks. The students are learning the meticulous, artful science of how to sew for the first time. The thirty learners are huddled around and behind the educator to see how to properly use the industrial sewing machine. Whispers fill the air despite the sewing machine's hum. "I can't see!...What is Ms. R doing with the fabric!...What measurement did she sew?" are just a few phrases that can be heard in the background.

A document camera would enable me to display highly technical tasks that coincide with the use of the industrial sewing machine onto the large projector screen for all to see!

As you can imagine, sewing integrates many important mathematical concepts specific to exploration and how mechanisms impact one another to trigger the machine's motor. Students need to see the processes in action in order to truly learn and grasp the techniques. With this incredible bit of technology, my students will be fully constructing garments in no time!
