About My Students

I like to think of my Spanish class as more than just as a language course. I design it to also be a course in cultural exploration. I am excited to join forces with my students to bring this experiential learning opportunity to our school. It's going to be fun planning the event together!

Every year Spanish 1 does a unit on food. Today I asked my students if they would rather: research recipes and make their own dishes to share with the class OR invite a chef to do a cooking demonstration and bring food from her restaurant. After a few minutes of discussion and students being split on which to do, a student said, "Can we do both? I think if I learned how to make food from Argentina and liked it, it would inspire me to learn how to cook." The rest of the class was on board with this suggestion! In order to meet the goals that my students have established for this project, we need a professional chef who can give an interactive cooking demonstration and cultural lesson. Additionally, we need the funds for her and her team to prepare a full Argentine lunch for our classes.

One thing that I love about teaching a world language is giving students the opportunity to go outside their comfort zone. Our class is about taking chances: being willing to make mistakes when speaking Spanish, exploring new and challenging topics and trying unfamiliar foods and customs. This is a skill that was serve my students well personally and academically.

In Their Own Words

We are all Spanish 1 students. Our goals are that we want to try new food (even though some of us are very picky eaters), broaden our knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world in an interesting way, and know more about Argentina through a person who was actually born and raised in Argentina! We aim to learn language and culture at the same time to prepare us for a future where we will be confident to interact with diverse people.

The word "leadership" is actually in the name of our school, so we take this seriously. We are going to be leaders by: eating this new food and showing others that trying new things is great! We plan to set up the classroom and decorate it with products from Argentina so other classes can also learn about this country. Lastly, we will spread the word to other people that there is more to the Spanish-speaking world than sombreros and chimichangas. Those are stereotypes that need to go away!

This project is important to us because there are a lot of misconceptions about people who speak Spanish. People say things like, "She's Spanish," even though the person may be from Puerto Rico. We are a very diverse high school, so being culturally informed will help us be better members of our community and enhance our future.
