Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach a wonderful group of kindergarten students in a public school in rural southwestern Arizona. Most of the students in my classroom are from low-income households, military, second language students, and some with mild disabilities. With the various challenges facing these students, they are still extremely eager to learn. They are happy, well-adjusted, and working hard towards success in kindergarten.

Kindergarten students in my classroom participate in STEAM lessons that include Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, and Social Studies.

Writing is incorporated throughout the STEAM curriculum. This year I am incorporating class books into our weekly writing. The book pages are made by students and bound together. It is my hope to make a class book weekly. Access to a binding machine will help to make our class books more like a real books with bindings. Engineering specific structures in our learning themes is extremely engaging. We will be engineering an igloo out of milk cartons, a shade structure from recycled materials, and a gingerbread house, to name a few. A glue gun is needed to help glue some of the big engineering pieces. My students are also in need of glitter and paint to help with various art projects in STEAM. Students paint costumes, birdhouses, and holiday crafts.

I know that when my students are having fun making things and being imaginative, they are learning. Most importantly, they are enjoying school. Having the necessary items to complete STEAM activities will help my students achieve success and reach learning goals in kindergarten.
