My Students

I teach first grade at a Title 1 school in West Harlem. Most of my students come from low-income families. My students are bright, motivated, and passionate learners. They are inquisitive children that devour anything and everything that piques their interest!

Most of my students don't have books at home, and we don't have a school library.

Therefore, my students rely on our classroom library to find books that captivate their imaginations and as a quiet place where they can find solitude.

My Project

My students have made such amazing reading progress in just two months! But they are uncomfortable sitting at tables in plastic chairs to read. They need a cozy sofa and chairs that are just their size to lie back and get lost in their books. They need low tables to kick their feet up, or organize their books. They need a lighted globe to create a warm atmosphere and refer to when they encounter unknown places in their stories.

When kids are cozy and comfortable, reading time becomes the highlight of the school day!

Children will be able to spend more time focused on reading rather than squirming in their seats. Research has shown that in-school reading time is key to building a love of reading. In-school reading is especially important for students from lower-income households. Many students in the lowest income bracket do most of their reading at school. Therefore, creating a cozy library is essential to my students' success!
