Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 9th through 12th graders who are all tackling extremely challenging high school math curriculum. The students in my classes range from 13 to 18 years old. About 80% of my students have Individualized Education Plans and/or are English language learners. Most of them live and go to school in East Harlem, a diverse and culture-filled neighborhood in Manhattan. The majority of my students live in low-income housing, public housing projects, or even shelters. Many have come into the classroom carrying a baggage of trauma that most people have not had to deal with in a lifetime.

Despite all that my students have to deal with outside of our school doors, they are used to coming to school EVERY SINGLE DAY—with enthusiastic smiles on their faces, ready to learn.

Our school has always been a safe and comforting place for my students who relied on the school staff for emotional support and the school building for food and warmth.

My Project

My students have struggled immensely during this COVID-19 pandemic. Learning from home was truly a struggle for them (and for me as well!). We are city people. We are used to being out and about, going about our lives in our beautiful city streets. We are used to hopping on buses and riding subways all around our amazing city. Unfortunately, during COVID, our lives were upended. We lost our sense of normalcy. School buildings were shuttered and homes became schools.

So many of my students have shut down and have forgotten how it feels to be in classrooms, learning in a setting around their peers and teachers.

This project will help my students transition back to normalcy. My goal as their math teacher is to make our classroom space feel as homey as possible. I want them to feel welcome and comfortable in our learning environment. With this high level of comfort, this will hopefully translate into higher learning outcomes and higher levels of student engagement.
