Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help me give my students a choice of more diverse and current authors in our class library. Having more books to engage them as readers will foster life-long readers.

I am introducing my students to current diverse YA writers from different ethnicities.

I believe it is important for students to read books with characters they can identify with: from similar neighborhoods, home life, issues with friends, family and being a teen in an urban city. Stories they are interested in!

Many students are not familiar with current Young Adult novels and the few I have brought in from my home have been devoured.

The school is located in an urban, inner city area and some of the student's experience with reading is limited. Some students did not grow up surrounded by books or experienced the joy of losing yourself in a great story.

My goal is to inspire students to enjoy reading by having a current selection of books for our "reading corner" and to also create a space that is beckoning for them to sit and "get lost" in a book.

My Project

My Project will expand our library with additional copies of Young Adult novels. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. The bean bags will give students a choice of seating and provide a comfortable place to read.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.

The titles I have selected are similar in genre to the Young Adult novels the students have shown interest in.
