Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As a social worker at G.P. School, which serves kindergarten to fifth grade, my role is to support the students, the teachers that work with them, and their families. Students with social-emotional concerns receive social work services in which I work with them on a variety of deficits they may show, such as poor social skills, lack of self-awareness, poor self-management, inability to focus/pay attention, making appropriate choices, impulsivity, managing anger/heightened emotions, etc. I consult with their teachers to support transferring those skills to the classroom.

Students who visit the Wellness Center should have a safe space to talk about whatever emotions they may be experiencing at the moment or to work on improving their social skills; This space should feel warm and inviting, and, most importantly, comfortable.

Comfortability in the Wellness Center makes a world of difference to those students who are there to learn ways to express and cope with their emotions. Students sit at desks and chairs most of the school day, so while in the Wellness Center, they should not feel like they are in yet another classroom. When students are comfortable, they are noticeably more willing to open up and work on the areas that need improvement. In addition, they are more receptive to learning and developing the skills that will benefit them for years.
