My Students

For many of my students, kindergarten is their first experience in a school setting. They begin the year thinking we will spend the day playing together, and I want my classroom to feel like that as much as possible. My students love to play, sing, create, and learn new things.

Kindergartners are eager to learn and do their best, and I strive to instill a love of learning at an early age.

My students attend an incredible elementary school in Virginia where we value making connections and putting the needs of students first.

My Project

I have been slowly changing the physical layout of my classroom over the years to better meet the needs of my students. During play time and independent centers, many of my students gravitate toward the loud, energetic, open space on our area rug.

I want to create a calm, soft, quieter area with giant pillows on the other side of the room for students who need it throughout the day.

Research has shown that an integration of a variety of tools such as fidget toys, manipulatives, and visual stimulation aid students through sensory integration therapy. Keeping small tools (such as liquid motion tubes and bristle blocks) in our calming corner, they can be used by students who need them to take a break or regulate their emotions throughout the day.

This project would help me continue to build a classroom where students feel safe, comfortable, and accepted. These materials will be used in my classroom this year and hopefully for many, many years to come. Please help these young students start their school lives off with a strong foundation and a love for school.
