Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are 24 creative and hardworking first grade students in our classroom who inspire me every day. We are the only first grade class in a high needs, low-income school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Despite so many hardships outside of our four walls, my students are eager to come to school to learn and do their best. Our classroom is the type of place where they feel not only safe, but brave and take risks and ask questions while leading their own learning.

My students each learn in their own way, and that often means dipping into my own pockets to support them, as their teacher, to make sure everyone succeeds.

Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide their children with supplies for school. I aim to inspire our earliest learners on a path of academic excellence by immersing them in a supportive, engaging and thought-provoking environment.

My Project

Flexible seating has swept classrooms and previous students of mine have voiced how much they love having the ability to choose how and where they learn. These materials will be used by my firsts, some of who have not had the privilege to learn in a classroom setting yet. Students will be get to choose which seating choices they work best in by trying out comfy floor seats at a low table.

When students can discover how they work best, focus is better and more is accomplished.

This idea of taking charge of their learning is such an important skill to teach little minds. All learners can benefit from these flexible seating options and flexible seating will offer my students the chance to build back their core muscles and move freely around our brave space at this critical age.
