My students are 9-10 year olds in a Title I school. 80% or more of them are qualified for free lunch. They are motivated, dedicated, and diligent. They attend school every day and put forth their best effort into their learning . The school building is very old, and there is no air conditioner. On hot days, students are sweaty in the classroom and the classroom starts to feel very uncomfortable. It is very hard to breathe in a hot classroom, and it is harder to focus on academic learning.
Coping with oppressive heat in a sweltering classroom isn’t just slightly bothersome.
Hot classrooms are unhealthy for students and staff and the lack of air conditioning can directly impact student outcomes.
Air conditioning appears to offset nearly all of the damaging impacts of cumulative heat exposure on academic achievement.
Heat can adversely affect student performance. Students are more attentive, focused, and happier when learning in comfortable temperatures.
We are about to be hit with a heat wave in Northern Utah, and my students will not only need air conditioning to stay cool and comfortable, but they will need refillable water bottles and a small fridge/freezer to keep water bottles cold.
