Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

"The only way to have a friend is to be one." - Ralph Waldo Emerson Compassion is a critical skill for children to learn. Our middle school students put great value into making a friend and being a friend. I feel like students will gain a deeper understanding of the word Compassion by having a chance to read stories and articles online about other children in other countries, as well as using this computer as a tool to write compassion letters to these children.

I'd love to have this computer as a tool students can use to read about children around the world and their experiences.

This will give them a different perspective and allow them to view the lives of other students through a different lens. The computer will also allow them to write letters to these other children and create bonds with them so that they can now have empathy and understanding of what it is like in their shoes.

Students will type these letters and become pen pals, which will help them to see life through another lens. The computer will give students access to online articles and journals about how other children live life in other countries and the extreme difficulties they endure when they try to get an education.

Students will also be able to use this computer to write journals on how they feel about these topics.

These letters will be encouraging, and filled with motivational quotes and messages to not give up hope. Throughout the project, students will complete rating scales for their feelings about compassion and empathy. Students will also use the computer to journal about their learning experiences. Upon completing the project, students will complete a survey to express their feelings about different topics related to compassion, empathy, and alleviating suffering.
