Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Even though it is 2017, we still need so many tools and materials to teach our kids 21st century skills like coding and physical computing. We just don't have anything like that at this school. Our kids are creative and motivated learners, but they don't often have the chances to engage in the kind of learning that will really let them creatively expand their ideas.

I teach ESL and Technology to 90 students in sixth through tenth grade and these are some amazingly creative kids. Our kids want to learn technology and to be creative, but there is no room in our budget for the simple things that will help kids truly create!

Students in my technology and drafting class will be able to develop 3D models and learn how to use AutoCAD and Inventor programs to develop their own home plan, and create a 3D model of their house design. They will learn to post process their CAD design in order to run a CNC 3D printer and learn the modern manufacturing process.

Mechanical design will be stressed with a 3D built project after designing it in CAD. The skills of reading and creating blueprints electronically will be emphasized.

Several students will need to use these computers in a rotation after designing their ideas as a sketch, then creating a mechanical diagram with dimensions and specifications for building the projects. We really need these Dell Inspiron Computers to train our students for the future.

In Their Own Words

The computers we're using right now are so slow! We are waiting forever to process something and the images don't move fluidly at all - whenever you do something, you have to wait and click and wait. You have to hold on to the mouse for half a minute sometimes while it does what you ask!

We've been working in teams to draw this up and some people are better at the graphics, some people are better at the concept and problem-solving. It's been really good for us to be able to work together. We want to design something to be out in the community and build something that will last and be a legacy!

I think that with this computer, we'll be able to really build the stuff we've been talking about. It's just too slow working with what we have and the good programs like AutoCAD won't even run on the machines we've got. This one looks so professional - I feel like a pro when I'm learning how to use it!

With this computer, we can design and work together using real programs that will be out there for jobs that we want to have!
