My Project

I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I currently teach a Kindergarten - 2nd grade class made up of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They require a variety of comfortable places in the classroom to learn!

Getting away from a desk and having flexible seating will allow my students to sit, learn, and be in a space that feels comfortable and helps them focus while also giving their bodies the ability to move and adjust as needed!

A classroom rug offers students a designated space in our classroom to meet as a whole and well as flexible seating for all. The rug will complete our library area will provide my students a spot to listen to stories, use as a comfortable meeting space to complete our letter identification and phonics program, to use as a spot for independent reading and even work on various independently ADL skills. We will come to the rug to learn, share ideas, and enjoy stories. This rug would be so beneficial to my classroom and a wonderful addition to our classroom learning environment.

By varying the approaches to learning based on each student’s needs, there is greater opportunity for every student to learn and grow!
