Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Be yourself, everyone else is taken." Oscar Wilde. My classroom is set up with choices for each student to make a conscious decision to part take in their own education. This is expressed in various ways, from sharing video blogs describing recent books to morning current event news broadcasts.

This year, I have the privilege of working with three very unique classes, one being a special needs inclusion class.

Our students are eager and resilient. They are dedicated to self growth and drive each other to be successful in everyday task from homework, to class participation and more. They encourage one another to stand by their own work and voice their individuality. Our school strives for excellence and each one of us share the excitement as they grow from school dependent learners to independent learners. Their ability to make the decision of what they want to read and more importantly Where they want to read, will ultimately lead them to be successful readers and leaders of the future.

My Project

By creating a safe space within the classroom, this area rug will allow students to find a comfortable nook where they can truly get lost in the whimsical world of reading. This space will also be used for restorative circle practices where students will discuss topics and find connections to one another through sharing their opinions, experiences and beliefs. This area will be used for multiple types of growth including peer mediation where they will be able to resolve conflicts in a calming place and develop their own problem solving skills.

Right now, in our classroom students are often reading at their desks in a chair sitting in the same seats for Reading, Writing and Health.

By creating this space with an area rug, my students will be able to experience a school day where they can find comfort and freedom in selecting where they want to work, and will have a choice as to where they participate from. This will make their classroom space one where they can develop a love for being in class.
