A Comfortable Place For All To Learn

My Students

Aristotle said, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." In my classroom I try to create the sense of family, structure and security that many of my students may be missing at home. I want each of them to know that they can achieve anything if they work hard.

I teach in a Title 1 school in an urban area of New York.

My school population is comprised of low income students who receive free or reduced lunch as well universal free breakfast. Many of our students are struggling learners. Despite their individual challenges they come to school each day, eager and ready to learn. Providing my students with a comfortable place where they can sit and focus during lessons is key. Currently my students sit on the floor or in nearby chairs for morning meeting and whole class learning activities. The new rug requested will allow each of my students to have their own personal space during such activities.

My Project

Having a place where my students can sit down or stretch out and be comfortable will also give them a great sense of freedom. Sitting behind desks or tables throughout the day presents challenges to many of my students. Having the ability to work somewhere besides their desk if often just what they need in order to focus better and complete their work. In addition, this carpet will allow our "meeting place" to be more personal as well as inviting. We gather here several times a day to learn and work together as a community. From morning meeting, to listening to stories and even playing math games, this area will be our special gathering place. Lastly, since many of my students have asthma, having a vacuum will allow us to keep the rug clean and free from dust and dirt.

Your donation to this project will help brighten our classroom, give structure to our group lessons and foster the sense of family and togetherness that the students need in order to strive to be successful.
