My Students

My future leaders are 5th grade students residing in the South Side region of Richmond, VA. The neighboring areas consist of lower income families. As a result, many of our students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as backpack lunches for the weekend due to family hardships. Although the families receive lower incomes than surrounding areas, they are extremely hard working and want the best education for their children.

Students at our elementary school are natural leaders - extremely bright, talented, and driven to succeed.

Despite our students' hard work and the efforts of our staff, many of our students are reading below grade level. This is the result of exposure to external pressures that aren't typical in suburban areas such as hunger and poverty. This puts many of our students at a disadvantage lowering their self-confidence. Although dynamics at home can be difficult, I plan to create a positive learning environment that is a testament to the fact that it is not what you have but how you make the most of it.

My Project

This year has had it challenges, but my students continue to overcome obstacles that are thrown in their way and rise above them. I want to treat my students with a present to send them on their winter vacations of coloring materials. They will be used at home and at school to further their artistic skills. Additionally, 5th grade math is particularly difficult, so I want to send them on break with multiplication flash cards to continue their learning. Lastly, we need to keep our classroom clean - therefore- more Lysol is always appreciated!
