My Students

My class is full of visual learners who love technology! They would love a color printer for our classroom. This would allow them to use technology and visual aids to increase their depth of understanding of new material.

I am a Special Education Teacher at a school located in a low income neighborhood in New York.

We are an Early Childhood Center that ranges from Pre-K to Grade 2. The staff at our school pride ourselves on creating a love of learning in young children so they may carry it with them throughout their lives. The students in my class have been diagnosed with disabilities such as autism, speech and language disorders, and learning disabilities. The students in my special education class have very different learning styles. However, most of these students benefit from new material presented visually. Visual thinking and learning utilize graphical ways of working with ideas and presenting information. Research in both educational theory and cognitive psychology tells us that visual learning is among the very best methods for teaching students of all ages how to think and learn. A new color printer would allow us to print images to help students gain a deeper understanding of new material.

My Project

For example, we have been completing a thematic unit on New York City. We studied several landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and Central Park. Students then chose to make posters about their favorite landmarks. Each group searched the Internet for photos of the landmark to aid them in adding detail and remind them of what they learned. I went home, printed the photos in color, and distributed them to the class. These photos were great visual aids to the students while completing the task. The class then pasted the photos onto their posters to make informative masterpieces! They were so proud of their work, and it was all sparked by small colorful pictures of New York landmarks. A color printer for our classroom would allow for seamless lessons that include technology and visual aids. Students can search the Internet for any photos or graphics that will help them with projects and print them, in color, right from our classroom!

A color printer would allow children to become facilitators in their own learning by printing photos and graphics that will increase their own understanding of the topic.

We believe children gain the most knowledge and increase understanding when they are actively engaged in learning. Please support me in creating these opportunities for my special education students. Thank you!
