Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday my students face the stark realities of living in the South Bronx. My job is to open up their young minds to the world outside the urban jungle; to imagine, to dream, to believe. To boldly go where many have gone by using the most powerful tool given to humanity, knowledge.

My students are burdened by generational poverty.

They are the children of newly arrived immigrants. Many of my student's parents work long hours to provide them with basic needs. Due to this fact many of my students are not exposed to advantageous forms of media and literature at home. The parents lack the funds or knowledge on how, or where to expose their children to a worthwhile and fun educational experience. My school is located in a low income neighborhood, and we lack the funds to run a well developed Sci-Fi/Fantasy Club.

My Project

The resources you will donate for my project will be used strictly for the purpose of running the Sci-Fi and Fantasy appreciation club. During club time students will be exposed to various forms of age appropriate Sci-Fi and Fantasy media. They will read Sci-Fi and Fantasy literature in the form of books, graphic novels comics, and informational text. The students will be introduced to both genres and discuss common elements found in the various media. They will be expose to Sci-Fi and Fantasy films related to the themes discussed in class. At the end of the program the students will produce their own Sci- Fi/Fantasy, short story, poem, poster, or comic.

Using Sci-Fi and Fantasy in the form of poetry, music, comic books and film can reinforced previous skills learned in the classroom.

Students will also learn to analyze various forms of media. My students will learn that anyone can be a hero and learn valuable life lessons from the media and discussions held in the club. They will learn the importance of accepting those who are different, to stand up for what they believe in, and to use their imagination.
