My Students

I am a second grade special education teacher teaching in a in a low-income neighborhood. My students are composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children’s experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to take their children to explore the world beyond the hectic confines of their neighborhood and take advantage of the diverse cultural experiences that the city has to offer.

Moreover, my students have challenges learning English and have special needs compounding an already difficult and frustrating situation at home.

My Project

The center of our learning takes place on our rugs. We do our morning meeting on the rug to build our community. We learn new knowledge in all subject areas on our rugs. For example, during math, we use both our rugs to divide the class into small groups to make math more interactive and hands on.

Furthermore, our students also get tired of sitting on chairs to do their independent work so they love the option of choosing a quiet spot on the rug to help them focus and complete their work.

A new vacuum cleaner will teach my students to be responsible by taking care of the vacuum and keeping the classroom clean instead of using an old fashion broom which doesn’t really clean up all the debris. Getting a new vacuum will help us learn better and concentrate! No more picking up scraps during discussion and no more cleaning the rug using the broom! My students will be so excited getting a new vacuum and it means having a cleaner place to learn!!
