My Students

My students are an energetic group of bright and curious preteens with special needs that range from emotional disabilities to intellectual disabilities to autism. They attend a specialized public school in Brooklyn, for students with disabilities and travel from all around the city each day. Many of the students in the school come from high needs communities; some are English Language Learners and all qualify for free lunch.

My students are budding leaders with much to say for themselves.

They question everything and love to interact with each other and their school community. Despite the challenges they face on a daily basis, they come to school eager to learn and ready to do their best. I love having the opportunity to guide them through their learning process.

My Project

Many of my students have fine motor skill impairments that make typing an optimal outlet for their writing and nearly all of them have computer research goals on their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Despite this, we only have one old desktop computer in our classroom.

When it comes time to conduct research, type essays, or use any of the millions of online resources that help students with special needs learn, we encounter a bottleneck comparable to the BQE at rush hour.

I have requested 3 Acer Chromebooks to give my students more access to informational videos, educational games and digital presentation tools, as well as more opportunity to acquire the typing skills that most of us take for granted (remember 8th grade keyboarding class, anyone?).

Having 4 classroom computers including Old Faithful will allow small groups to daily access learning tools that can be specifically tailored for their needs. Students will no longer have to wait several days for their turn to type their projects and struggling readers can use videos with their new headphones and use images to complete research.

My students face so many challenges every day. Access to technology in their school should not be one of those challenges.
