My students are first graders who live in Chicago.

First Grade is a perfect time to learn about nature and focus on the natural world through projects all year. I try to bring the outdoors into the classroom since the weather and our urban environment can make studying outside challenging at times. There have been many studies on the importance of classroom environment to learning. Reggio Emilia is one approach that uses the natural world to ignite curiosity and creativity in young children.

My Project

I am requesting a rug that thematically connects to our First Grade projects in Science and Social Studies while providing a clean and comfortable place to work. First Graders need to move around their room. We have desks and chairs for independent work and a space for whole group work, but children need a place to collaborate as well. This large rug will provide a soft place to sit while children do their most important partner work. Everyday, they will do their important Daily Five Work in Reading and Writing on this rug. They will grow by playing Math Games on the rug. They will make important Scientific Observations and explore Social Studies concepts on this rug. We will work on our Ecological and Global Awareness Projects on this rug.

Your donation will help each child in this classroom put their roots down and establish a love for learning through collaboration and exploration.

They will branch out everyday, becoming strong yet flexible learners. Your donation will provide a clean, comfortable, natural place for very young children to embark on their educational journey. You are setting the stage for learning!
