My favorite thing about my high school is seeing students from both ends of the financial meter come together to learn, play, and grow into young adults. My high school is in an urban setting, and it hosts students from all ethnic groups and socioeconomic statuses. I teach English to a broad range of 11th graders. Many of my students receive free and reduced lunches, and my classes include a wide range of abilities. We have block scheduling at my school, so students have four ninety-minute periods each day. English classes are one semester long.
It's difficult to describe my students in a nutshell because there are so many, and they are all so unique.
However, there are two similar traits that categorize these kids: they either a desire to please their teacher, or a desire for their teacher to inspire a desire to please. The former have experienced academic success, love learning, and enjoy acknowledgment for their achievements. The latter may or may not have achieved moderate success in school, and are more guarded, but underneath the surface is a kid who wants a teacher to earn their trust and respect.
My Project
Self-selected reading is part of a balanced approach to literacy. In my classroom, time is set aside every day for sustained silent reading: everyone in the class reads a book of choice for twenty minutes. Independent reading improves language skills, from increasing word knowledge to internalizing grammar conventions.
The diverse learners in my classroom need a variety of books that appeal to their unique interests.
This book list was curated for avid and reluctant readers, for athletes and artists, for inner city teens, and for affluent youth - these are the amazing individuals I teach!
Each and every one of my students will find in these books point of views with which they can identify, themes about which they are passionate, topics to spark their curiosity, and characters with whom they will fall in love. Your donations will invest in teenagers' literacy skills and foster their relationships with reading.
